Damage to life cannot be reversed – Ranil
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said it is possible to rectify the harm done to the economy, but damage to life cannot be reversed. He said that therefore, it is the responsibility of the Government to protect the lives of people and that he requests that it be done. Wickremesinghe added, the COVID-19 pandemic is spreading rapidly in Sri Lanka, India and Nepal. In addition to COVID-19, another disease named Black Fungus has surfaced in India. We have to protect the people of this country from all of these diseases.
The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement following discussions with a number of our medical specialists, recently. According to this statement, it has been predicted that the COVID-19 pandemic will spread very rapidly throughout the country within the coming few weeks. “We have to keep in mind another fact. That is, that there is a shortage of vaccines in our country. It could take until next year or at least until the end of this year to vaccinate every person in the country.
Until then, people have to be protected. Therefore, the responsibility of the Government is to take further steps based on medical advice. If they want to lockdown the country, that will have to be done as well. “Then, we can obtain reports weekly to see whether the COVID-19 pandemic has been brought under control and observe the progress. I do not know whether there are any other alternatives. The COVID19 pandemic spreading more and more is a death blow to the already weak economy. Consequently, it is necessary to halt the spread of the disease. If that is done, we can minimise the damage to the economy. What I request the Government to do at this moment is to save the lives of the people of this country.”
