Lengthy queues were seen forming up outside liquor stores and supermarkets islandwide since Friday (17) afternoon. This was following reports that the Excise Department had given permission to open liquor stores from Friday (17) onwards.
Accordingly, liquor shops bearing the Excise Department licence FL04 (wine stores) and FL22B (beer and wine shops) were said to be granted permission to open for business. However, no official announcement has been made regarding this thus far.
Attempts of Ceylon Today to contact Excise Department officials including its spokesperson regarding the matter were unsuccessful until this edition went to press. Earlier, the Excise Department gave permission to sell liquor in selected tourist hotels and special licensed locations exclusively for foreign tourists.
Hotel categories 07, 08 and Boutique Villas were permitted to sell liquor to the tourists in accordance with the Health Guidelines issued by the Director General of Health Services.
