Creating a Cosy Corner at Your Home to Relax
By Ama H.Vanniarachchy
Tired of a hectic day at work and home? Or feeling boring of the same setup at your home? How about having a cosy corner to relax reading your favourite book, sipping some creamy coffee and cuddling your pet dog? A cosy corner is ideal to have some ‘me time’, enjoying your own company or to spend a quite evening enjoying the sunset. A cosy corner is a perfect place to enjoy a meal watching the birds and enjoying the breeze.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a cosy corner at your place. You can make one easily.
How do you create a cosy corner? It’s pretty easy. You will need a small area in your house, preferably a balcony. You probably already have all the things you need to do it. There is no need to spend a lot to buy all new things. Just walk around the house, peep in to your store room and find what you have. Always remember to recycle, reuse and reduce!
So let’s get started.
Things you will need to do.
Small space - A quiet, well-lit place. Make sure this place has good ventilation. If you have a balcony or a quiet corridor that is ideal! If your chosen corner is dull and old, you can give it a new look by painting one wall with a vibrant colour. Do not hesitate to use bright colours. Always experiment with colours. If things go wrong you can always repaint or hang a nice painting or some handing plants. Use a carpet or a mat to add more texture to the place.
Comfortable chairs or a small sofa - The seating is very important as it must look inviting and comfortable. You can use an old bright coloured saree pallu of your grandmother to decorate the cushions. Use some old silk scarfs to add colour and noise by giving your corner an ethnic touch.
An old stool or a small table - My advice is, do not buy a new stool. Just use an old stool by giving it a makeover. Clean and paint the stool to give it a rustic look. A pale antique blue paint will be perfect.
Lots of plants - My priority is for tropical palms. These wonderful plants will add life to your cosy corner and they are easy to maintain. Another ideal plant is the Frangipani plant. Bougainvillea will do wonders and they are super easy to maintain. Dubai rose plants grown in tiny pots will light up your place in the morning. If you are a lazy gardener, you can have some succulents growing in tiny containers. Do not forget to use hanging pots and also if possible set up a supporter for some creepers or vines.
Outdoor lights - You can buy some outdoor lights from your local store for affordable prices. When shopping for lights, try various types of lights. Fairy lights will add a magical Tinker Bell essence. Tiny led lights lit inside glass bulbs or bowls, water proof lights are few examples.
Candles - There are a large number of candle varieties in stores. The scented ones are great! You can also collect used candles at home, boil them in a metal pot and make your customised candles by adding your favourite scents.
Finally, some ornaments! A bright painting, murals or some colourful devil masks will do great.
Now, take a rest and relax. All is set. Prepare a yummy meal or a creamy coffee, put on your comfortable pyjamas and cuddle up in the chair. Oh, don’t forget your pet dog, or cat. They will keep good company! Now enjoy your hard work and appreciate your talents.
