Local COVID vaccines alone do not guarantee complete protection : Prof. Agampodi

Infectious Disease Epidemiologist Professor Suneth Agampodi took to his official Twitter to remind the public that no vaccine is 100% effective at preventing any illness, including the coronavirus.

COVID-19 vaccines are effective and are a critical tool to bring the pandemic under control.

However, Prof. Agampodi observed that the breakthrough infection rate among fully vaccinated groups may be as high as 65-70% if the basic transmission prevention principles are not followed.

"Vaccination will prevent severe disease and deaths, not transmission," he tweeted, claiming that this message "needs to be very clear."

Health authorities have repeatedly urged the public to adhere to health guidelines and receive their vaccination at the earliest to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country and return the situation to normalcy.
