Local COVID-19 vaccination drive for children with disabilities to expand

The COVID-19 vaccination drive for children aged over 12 with disabilities is to be carried out across the country from Friday (01).

Earlier this month, it was decided to administer the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to those aged between 12 and 19 with underlying health conditions.

The inoculation drive commenced on 24 September, and is currently implemented within the Western province, and the Anuradhapura and Kurunegala districts.

While it has been decided to administer two doses of the Pfizer vaccine to those aged over 12 with inherent illnesses, Secretary of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians, Dr. Channa De Silva noted that a decision pertaining to the administration of a third dose, or a booster shot, is yet to be taken.

He noted, however, that several other countries have recommended the administration of a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine for children with immune deficiency disorders.
