Over 1,000 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were carried out at the Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Kandakadu, following the identification of a COVID-19 positive patient at the Welikada Prison on 7 July.
Medical sources said despite it had been two weeks since the Rehabilitation Centre’s former inmate was sent to the Welikada Prison, measures were taken to carry out PCR tests on the inmates at the Centre and the Polonnaruwa Prison. They said initially the PCR tests would be carried out on those who had been closest to the patient in question during his stay in Kandakadu.
Responding to questions, sources said testing was carried out at the Teaching Hospital in Anuradhapura as there were no facilities available for testing at Polonnaruwa.
Health sources said while 210 PCR tests were carried out on inmates and Prison Officials who had had close contact with the patient by the Medical Research Institute (MRI), they had come back negative. More PCR tests were carried out on the staff at the Prison Hospital by the laboratory facility of the Apeksha Hospital, Maharagama.
Measures were also taken to send 186 inmates of the Welikada Prison to the Welikanda Quarantine Centre while seven Prison officials were sent to other quarantine centres.
