COVID-19 cases in Colombo near 20,000 mark

The total number of COVID-19 infected patients in the Colombo District is closing in on 20,000, the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) said.
According to its district distribution of confirmed COVID-19 patients, the NOCPCO said by yesterday (19) morning, a total of 19,950 patients were recorded from Colombo, while Gampaha and Kalutara in the Western Province had 11,118 and 3,842.
The Centre said Kandy had recorded 2,403 patients, Ratnapura 1,138, Galle 1,057, Kurunegala 996, Ampara 848, and Kegalle 732.
However, during the first 19 days of 2021, that is from 1 January till yesterday, Colombo recorded 2,806, while Gampaha, Kandy, and Kalutara recorded 2,120, 809, and 755 respectively. The NOCPCO said Galle, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, and Kegalle have recorded 399, 328, 320 and 312 respectively during the same period.
Further Jaffna, Mannar, Mullaitivu, and Kilinochchi recorded a total of 100 cases, while Vavuniya recorded a total of 181 patients during the same period.
The Northern Province has detected 625 cases to date. Director of District General Hospital, Vavuniya, Dr. T. Gandeepan, said there was a decline in the number of COVID-19 patients being detected in the District.
However, he said seven hospital staff and two volunteers from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who were assisting patients at the OPD, had contracted the virus earlier this month. A staff member of his was diagnosed on 14 January 2021.
