The total number of COVID-19 cases crossed the 300,000 mark, with a total of 1,919 persons being tested positive for the viral infection, the Government Information Department (GID) said yesterday. The Department said with this, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country increased to a startling 301,811.

Elsewhere, Deputy Director General (Disaster Management and Emergency Response), Dr. Hemantha Herath, said interprovincial travel restrictions would be relaxed by August depending on community behaviour.

Relaxation of inter-provincial travel restrictions could be considered if the health authorities believe that the public will act responsibly and not precipitate the number of new COVID-19 cases being reported daily.

However, the Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka has lamented that the irresponsible behaviour of the public and organising marriage receptions violating the stipulated numbers and health guidelines could only serve towards a greater catastrophe in the near future.
