Cabinet has approved the introduction of new laws to provide provisions for the special procedure related to establishing Courts of First Instance. It is consented to amend Judicature Act No. 2 of 1978 to allow for the establishment of Courts of First Instance.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet Media briefing yesterday (15) at the Department of Government Information, Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said Minister of Justice Ali Sabry appointed a committee chaired by Justice of the Appeal Court, Dr. Ruwan Fernando to study the establishment of prior case trial and Courts of First Instance.

“As the delay in legal proceedings in this country has reached a critical stage, it has been recognised that a planned, targeted access with holistic and broad reformation is required to the Judiciary. Attention should be paid to the issues causing delays in legal proceedings and the judicial process should be activated and empowered,” he said.
