The Council of Ex-Muslims of Sri Lanka urged the Government to remove from birth certificates particulars on religion, ethnicity and marital status of parents.

‘It is unfortunate that political pressure and influence have been applied to reverse the Government’s previous decision to remove ethnicity, religion and race from the National Birth Certificate. The Council supports the previous decision of the Government and requests the Government to take steps to remove such clauses and columns from all the documents, applications and forms. It is the Council’s stance that mentioning religion, race and ethnicity in any legal and official documents such as oaths, Police complaints registers, affidavits, marriage certificates, among others, should be removed. This stance is based on humanist principles and values,’ a statement issued by them read.
