Confiscated vehicles handed over to Police
The Government has decided to hand over confiscated vehicles to the Police which are in the custody of the Customs. This decision was made in response to a request made from Minister of Internal Defence Chamal Rajapaksa to hand over to the Police these confiscated vehicles.
Through this proposal Minister Chamal Rajapaksa points out that 3,608 vehicles in the possession of the Police are more than 15 years old. Among these vehicles 909 jeeps are older than 15 years.
Although a period of approximately three years have been granted, so that port duty charges could be paid and the vehicles released, it has not been done so up to now. As a result, it has been observed that 39 vehicles, 185 vehicles and a van, regarding which court cases and investigations have been completed and are in the process of being finalised, a bus and five motor cars have been deemed to be suitable for the Police service.
Cabinet has granted approval for the release of these vehicles.
