Colombo DC slaps injunctions on UNP top brass
By Hansi Nanayakkara
The Colombo District Court (DC) yesterday imposed two injunctions on UNP Leader and National List MP, Ranil Wickremesinghe, its General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara and party Disciplinary Committee, preventing the expulsion of 31 of its Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) members.
Accordingly, the Court also issued notices on the respondents concerned to make submissions in this regard on 6 and 7 October. The two injunctions were slapped on the respondents by Colombo District Court Judges Aruna Aluthge and Sadun Vithanage respectively, having perused petitions filed by UNP PS members of Kothmale, Hanguranketha, Nuwara Eliya, Pujapitiya and Gampola.
Attorneys PM Cassim and Tharaka Nanayakkara appeared on behalf of the petitioners, instructed by Attorney Sanjeewa Kaluarachchi. The lawyers told the Judges that the party Disciplinary Committee had taken an arbitrary and illegal decision to expel them from the party membership based on flimsy charges after they had worked for the party at the previous Presidential Poll and General Election.
Hence, they stated that the decision taken to strip their UNP membership is a direct violation of the provisions contained in the Party Constitution and urged the two District Courts to issue an Order to invalidate the decision taken to expel them from the party
