Colombo Additional Magistrate dismisses CID’s request
By Hansi Nanayakkara
A request made by the CID to Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochani Abeywickrama to issue an order to release a female elephant and her baby from the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage to their original owners under the supervision of its officers, was dismissed yesterday (21).
The Magistrate having rejected the CID’s request advised them to submit the request before Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala.
The CID making submissions stated that based on a recent order issued by the Court, 15 elephants at the Orphanage had been sent back to their original owners except for this particular female and her calf. Anura Maddegoda PS along with Attorneys Ravindranath Dabare and Dilushi de Alwis made submissions on behalf of a few environmental organisations.
They informed Magistrate Abeywickrama that the elephant and her baby are considered public property and insisted that they were opposed to the pachyderms being released to a group claiming to be their owners. Accordingly the Magistrate ordered the trial to be convened before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on 24 September and advised all parties concerned to make submissions before Colombo Chief Magistrate Ragala.
