The Court of Appeal (COA) yesterday (23) restricted the registration of elephants that were previously ordered to be released by the Additional Magistrate of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and the Matale Magistrate and be registered under their owners until further notice.
Fourteen elephants that were in the custody of the Department of National Zoological Gardens as production in cases were previously ordered to be released and be registered under their owners by the Additional Magistrate of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and the Magistrate of the Matale Magistrate’s Court.
The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ), together with environmentalists, filed a petition against such order when the case was taken up before Justices of the COA, Sobhitha Rajakaruna and Dhammika Ganepola yesterday (23), who ordered for the restriction of the registration of the elephants.
The Court further extended the order to retain the elephant ‘Sujeewa’ and her calf who were two of the said elephants under the care of the Department of Wildlife Conservation and Zoological Department.
The Court also directed the petitioners to file their counter objections in this regard before 18 January and it was decided to reconvene the case on 18 February to support the application.
