CID neglected to initiate probe
By Keerthi Mendis
Though a written request had been made to the CID to initiate a probe on the sudden disappearance of billionaire businessman Saman Wijesiri two years ago, a senior officer at the CID at the time had not shown any response. The Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Chilaw Division had informed in writing regarding the businessman’s disappearance to the CID through the SDIG of Chilaw and had requested to initiate a probe into the incident.
However, a top officer at the CID at the time had informed the SSP of the Chilaw Division that due to the busy schedule of CID sleuths it would be impossible to probe Wijesiri’s disappearance.
However, following investigations being handed over to the Organised Crimes Division of the Police Department it had been confirmed that businessman Saman Wijesiri had been killed. Three suspects had been apprehended in connection with the killing and remanded. One of the suspects is a relative of the victim. The slain billionaire had been abducted on 13 October 2018 and his body had been dumped in the Chilaw lagoon.
