The vaccination drive against COVID-19 in Sri Lanka began its third dose rollout on Friday (22) with the administering of a booster shot of Sinopharm to all Chinese nationals residing and working in Sri Lanka. The programme commenced with 3,000 Chinese nationals receiving the jab at the Port City premises, the reclaimed land by China Harbour Engineering Corporation. According to the Chinese Embassy in Colombo, 3,000 Chinese nationals received the Sinopharm booster vaccine on Friday and the rollout will continue for a couple of days in different places.

With the inter-provincial travel restriction, the booster jabs would be given in the coming days, said Chinese Embassy spokesperson Luo Chong. According to him, the vaccination rollout was organised by the Chamber of Chinese Companies. He added the jabs were given with full assistance from the Sri Lankan authorities and they were grateful for that.

Regional Epidemiologist, Colombo Dr. Dinuka Guruge said the Chinese nationals in Sri Lanka received their first and second jabs of Sinopharm before the National Drug Regulatory Authority approved it for the locals. She said it was the Chinese Embassy in Colombo that requested the booster for Chinese nationals living in Sri Lanka. She said, in addition to the Chinese workers at the Port City, the locals working there too were also referred by the Chinese Embassy for vaccination.
