Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday ordered the Director of the Southern Province Health Service and the Controller of the Unawatuna Drug Store to submit to the Galle Division Crimes Unit, a detailed list of names, of those from the Western Province (WP), who had been given the AstraZeneca vaccine on 5 and 7 June.

The Magistrate also ordered the Director of the Southern Province Health Service and the Controller of the Unawatuna Drug Store to hand over to the Galle Crimes Unit a complete report containing the precise amount of vaccines that had been provided to the drug Store, the amount of vaccines that had remained as excess as well as the CCTV camera footage of the incident. He also ordered the relevant telecommunication firms to submit a complete report of telephone record data of an individual on whom a statement had been recorded in this connection to the Galle Division Crimes Unit.

Magistrate Kekunawela gave this order having perused submissions made to him by the Galle Division Crimes Unit, where they stated that on the two aforesaid dates a sizeable number of people from the Western Province had arrived in Galle through the Southern Highway to receive the second dose of the said vaccine, flouting the quarantine regulations put in place to curb the spread of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Magistrate had earlier issued an order to the Director of the Southern Highway to hand over all CCTV camera footage pertaining to the vehicles that had gone in the direction of Galle from the Pinnaduwa entrance, on the two dates in question, to the Galle Crimes Unit.

Police, making further submissions, stated that they had begun a probe into the incident after wide exposure by the local media as well as complaints received that a large number of unauthorised persons from the Western Province had arrived in vehicles to Galle to receive the second dose of the vaccine in question on 5 and 7 June.

The Police stated that complaints received had mentioned that these people from the Western Province had been given preference and priority ahead of those from the Galle District with regard to the inoculation of the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
