News Central Bank Told to Help Public Repay Loans

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Finance instructed the Central Bank to adopt necessary measures to provide suitable relief to the public to help replay loans considering difficulties faced due to COVID-19.

Rajapaksa stated that necessary and suitable steps to minimise difficulties faced by the public in repaying loans should be adopted. He made these statements during a meeting held with Central Bank officials at Temple Trees yesterday (16) to discuss the current economic situation.

The discussions also focused on the need to formulate a scheme that would enable borrowers to repay both instalments and interest together. Further attention was drawn to adopting a more humane approach when accepting residential property as collateral.
