Carry on Regardless
On 16 December 2019, BBC said: “A Sri Lankan employee of the Swiss Embassy in Colombo, who says she was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and forced to disclose information, has been arrested”. On 26 November 2019, Palitha Range Bandara, an MP of the former Yahapalana Government told the Media that within eight days of coming to power the new Government had abducted a Swiss Embassy employee in a white van. Thushara Indunil also of the former Yahapalana regime commented on how State terrorism was being enforced. Hans Peter Mock, the Swiss Ambassador fuelled the Swiss abduction imbroglio of 2019. The whole thing was nothing but a diplomatic hoax. Had the Sri Lanka Embassy officials behaved à la their Swiss counterparts in Switzerland there would have been international censure and an endless number of resolutions and reprimands. The Swiss created mayhem and got away with it.
Sri Lanka was left perplexed and there were many who tried finding a plausible reason for the absurd stage show other than trying to frame Sri Lanka’s newly appointed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Question was why the Swiss? Was the Tamil diaspora in Switzerland so powerful they could manipulate the Swiss Embassy? The motive behind the incident gradually gains clarity. Geneva was at one time the most expensive city in the world. It is a global financial and diplomacy centre owing to the presence of many agencies and foremost the UN headquarters. The key players in the drama were the Yahapalanayas. Wasn’t it they who agreed to the UN resolution in the first place. Succinctly put this was just another lame tripartite UN effort in embroiling Sri Lanka in white van abductions and human rights abuses: When better than to start from the very beginning.
The UN’s accusations against Sri Lanka are manifold and unfounded. Why did the UNHRC take up a war that was over? It is the first time that they did so! Was it because the UN harbours an ulterior motive and plans to create turmoil in Sri Lanka to serve their own ends?
Michelle Bachelet doesn’t have a shred of credible proof against Sri Lanka to support her arguments. The 40,000 civilians killed premeditative by the Armed Forces, the torture and human rights abuses were based on the Darusman report. The report proffered by Darusman, Sooka and Ratner, Ban Ki-Moon’s three-member panel of incompetent experts, was riddled with inaccuracies and unfounded claims that had no authenticated proof. Declarations given were made by undependable and tainted sources.
Bachelet’s failure in analysing all sides of the story depicts her as a morally harmful individual not fit to occupy the chair she sits in, ruining the stature of the very institution she proudly claims she works for. Had Bachelet been fair, she would have realised that missing persons can deliberately conceal themselves.
The estimated figures of civilians killed range from 7,000 to 9,000. These are figures proffered by the US State Department, UN Country Team, ICRC reports, the UK military Attaché Colonel Gash. Both Gash and the ICRC maintained there were no signs of torture. Why did Bachelet fail to take this into account? Why does Bachelet grapple the Darusman report to her heart with hoops of steel?
Michelle Bachelet’s tenure has been fraught with failures; nevertheless she carried on regardless and leaves behind a legacy of accusations and undesirable actions. The UN aura of invincibility is gradually cracking and the fissures reveal the violations and abuses made by them. The UN is an organisation which under the pretext of righting wrongs, commits acts of indecency and deceit regardless of the outcomes of its Members States.
The United Nations is metamorphosing into a disunited and disharmonious entity.
