Cabinet approved implementation of the decisions and recommendations of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Political Victimization Report from 2015 - 2019.
Accordingly, the Cabinet gave its consent to the proposal submitted by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to present the report to Parliament and to take necessary steps to implement the recommendations of the PCoI.
Chairman of the Committee, retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne presented the report to the President at the Presidential Secretariat on 8 December 2020.
The PCoI was entrusted with the task of inquiring into political victimisation and associated background which took place in the wake of investigations conducted by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, FCID, CID and the Special Investigation Unit of the Police from 8 January 2015 to 16 November 2019.
The three-member PCoI was appointed by the President on 20 January 2020.
Reportedly, the Commission received 1,971 complaints. The report consists of 3 volumes and 2,043 pages and the Commission also has conducted an in-depth investigation into serious fraud, corruption, abuse of State resources, privileges, power, and authority.
Addressing the weekly Cabinet Press briefing yesterday (19) at Department of Government Information Co-Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said that they will take actions to publicise the report after presenting it to Parliament.
When asked as to why it took so long to present the report to Parliament, he noted that the delay of publicising the report should not be considered in the backdrop of where the Court proceedings are being delayed for years.
