Cabinet nod to enhance national traffic database
By Thameenah Razeek
The Cabinet of Ministers authorised the implementation of the ‘Project to Enhance the National Traffic Transport Database and Capacity Building,’ which included a request for funding from the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Approval was also obtained to sign a discussion report between the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Ministry of Highways to ensure the project's implementation.
With the increase in traffic on roadways, a need for building a mechanism to regulate traffic on national highways, particularly those within Colombo has arisen.
Thus, a request from the Korean International Cooperation Agency has already been made through the Department of External Resources for assistance in updating the Road Development Authority’s existing data.
Under the proposed programme, the Ministry of Highways is expected to prepare a national level traffic transport data management plan, establish a base for collecting data on traffic transport, create an automatic traffic transport database management system, and improve the capability of analysing traffic transport demand.
