Cabinet has granted approval to appoint a committee headed by a former Judge to investigate the incident in which former State Minister Lohan Ratwatte had allegedly entered Anuradhapura Prison grounds while under the influence of alcohol.
Minister of Justice Ali Sabry has requested the Cabinet’s approval to constitute the committee. Cabinet Spokesman Dullas Alahapperuma made these remarks yesterday (22), at the weekly Cabinet Media briefing at the Department of Government Information and said relevant authorities have already recorded 23 statements from prison inmates. He stated that the administration will investigate the matter properly to maintain the public’s trust in the Government.
Furthermore, Alahapperuma noted that Ratwatte’s party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, and the Government will respond appropriately in separate circumstances and that unwarranted public tensions should be avoided.
“If a biased investigation is undertaken or if one party related to this alleged incident is treated unfairly, the Media has a duty to report it. But, we will not talk about it until we have the findings of the investigation in our hands,” he stated.
