Cabinet approves amending cattle slaughter laws

The Cabinet has approved to amend the laws and regulations to outlaw cattle slaughter in Sri Lanka and to table those amendments in Parliament. As a result, the Legal Draftsman has proposed amendments to Authority 272 of the Cattle Slaughter Ordinance No. 9 of 1893, Animal Act No. 29 of 1958, Municipal Councils Ordinance Authority 252, Urban Councils Ordinance Authority 255 and Pradeshiya Sabha Ordinance No. 15 of 1987. 

The Attorney General has certified that the aforementioned Bills do not violate any sections of the Constitution. Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the publication of these Bills as notices in the Government Gazette. Meanwhile on 28 September 2020, Cabinet approved prohibiting cattle slaughter in order to increase agriculture and milk production. Cabinet also approved amending the laws and regulations applicable to cattle slaughter and amending laws passed by local Government institutions in relation to the matter.
