By re-opening schools: Govt risking lives of teachers, students – SJB
The Government is desperately trying to prove that the country is now safe from COVID-19 by resuming academic activities in schools, risking the lives of both teachers and students, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayaka claimed.
“When the Government tried to resume academic activities in November 2020 there were so many issues. Those issues have impacted society and could be seen even now. Schools in urban areas will somehow maintain sanitation processes and other COVID-19 regulations, but what about schools in rural areas? The decision to resume academic activities from 11 January was taken by the Government, although there was resistance from many trade unions and other organisations. The Government should rethink further in this regard and resume academic activities in a safer and well organised method,” he added.
He further emphasised that students who carry out academic activities online are facing various issues.
“The Government should introduce a programme to provide free internet data to students for online education. Tutors should also be introduced to a proper mechanism to conduct tuition classes including a set of guidelines,” he added.
Attanayake expressed these views, yesterday (11) at a Media briefing at Opposition Leaders Office.
