Refuting allegations that bus engines in the country are malfunctioning due to inferior fuel, Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila said that 25 per cent of buses use kerosene leading to bus engines malfunctioning and breakingdown.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony for the Consumer Rights and Obligations Statement and Procedure for Handling Complaints and Resolving Disputes, he said trade unions are issuing statements claiming that bus engines are malfunctioning after they refuel buses with diesel.

Gammanpila noted that there are complaints that the diesel imported by the Energy Ministry is of poor quality, but most buses in fact mix diesel with kerosene or are run solely on kerosene and that buses operated by the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) should also be breaking down if the diesel is substandard, not just private buses.
