State Minister of Warehouse Facilities, Container Yards, Port Supply Facilities, Boats, and Shipping Industry Development Jayantha Samaraweera has requested the President to look into an issue where a building purchased with funds from the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) by Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, the former Minister of Health. He went on to state the former Government had taken over the building and that it was now vacant.
The Minister who visited the abandoned building said it was owned by a friend of Dr Senaratne and that around Rs. 90 million in Government funds have been misappropriated. “Eight years ago, this building belonged to Manjula Ranawaka, a local who rose through the ranks to become former Minister's coordination secretary.
The building was then purchased by Dr. Senaratne with the cooperation of the SPC's director board to help pay off Ranawaka's debt. “Because this building has been vacant for a long time, we requested the President to find a way to put it to use,” he stated. Despite Dr.Senaratne's claim that it would be used for teaching, Minister of State Prof. Channa Jayasumana recently indicated in Parliament that no training would take place there.
