Brian Thomas released on bail

Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala yesterday (18) enlarged on bail veteran cricket commentator Brian Thomas, who had been in remand on a charge of fraud.
Bail was set at Rs 25000 in cash and two sureties of Rs 500,000 each.
Thomas had been charged with defrauding a sum of Rs 143 million. The Magistrate also impounded the suspect’s passport. The CID commenced a probe against Thomas on a complaint lodged by businessman Dinesh Schaffter on 20 March 2019.
The complaint had stated that the suspect had defrauded the plaintiff of the aforesaid sum by posing off as an intermediary who was willing to invest in a well-known garment firm. The CID had stated in Court that inquiries conducted into the case had revealed that the garment firm in question had not been aware of the actions of the suspect.
The CID had stated that they had summoned the suspect to their office, where they recorded his statement and then arrested him.
