Boost for Kilinochchi agri sector
Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda has taken steps to release lands coming under the purview of the Department of Wildlife Conservation in the Kilinochchi District, as a way to boost the agriculture sector in the area.
The Ministry of Fisheries stated that a discussion in this regard had been held between the Minister of Wildlife and Forest Conservation C.B. Ratnayake and Devananda at the former’s Ministry on 19 October.
Devananda had stated that during the height of the war, some thousands of acres in the Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Mullathivu Districts had been abandoned, and observed that such lands could be utilised towards the development of the agriculture sector.
He urged Ratnayake to release these lands coming under the purview of the Department of Wildlife Conservation in the said Districts for agricultural activities, to which the latter consented.
