Bhanuka Rajapaksa who scored a match winning knock of 42 off 27, credits former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene for his success, and said the specific role he was given at number five paid off. Rajapaksa who was tried at number three without success, showed clear responsibility at number five, where he and Avishka Fernando were involved in an unbeaten partnership which guided Sri Lanka home after an early scare on Monday.
“After the arrival of Mahela Jayawardene, he changed some things, with Avishka at number four and me at number five, and we were given clear instructions, which made life easier for us,” said Rajapaksa.
Despite winning, Rajapaksa said there are areas to improve going forward. “I think it’s always a learning curve for any team, for any individual. You can’t be happy with our performance today (18) because I’m sure we have many more areas we need to improve. But overall, I think we could be happy with our performance, especially by the frontline bowlers.
They set the tone for us and it became much easier for the batsmen,” said Rajapaksa, “I think we have a bit of a concern when it comes to the top order as they struggled to get runs. At the same time, it’s not been in our favour, but I think going forward we’re looking to correct the mistakes that we have made in the past games.
It’s just another bad day for the top order batsmen. That’s why we look at it in a positive way. And as I said, going forward it’s a bit of a concern, but of course we’ll do the right things,” added Rajapaksa.
