Although I rarely ever travel to Kandy, I marvel at the picturesque views each time I do get the opportunity to travel up and down the winding Kandy Road.

One of the many iconic locations along the road is the town of Kadugannawa, a small village that is a popular stop for travellers wanting to ease the burden put on their engines. It is also here where you will find the historical Kadugannawa Ambalama – a 200 year-old stopover along the route that have been used by generations of people taking rest from their journeys, and an archaeological snapshot at Kandyan-Era architecture.

However, the busy town of Kadugannawa now lies desolate. Roads blocked after the recent landslide as remedial measures are taken. The only human presence there remaining limited to residents and public officials.

And so, I had the opportunity to stop and enjoy the views of Kadugannawa unadulterated by the noise of people, the smell of exhaust, and the rush of traffic. Instead, I was able to see Kadugannawa for what it really is – lush, green scenery stretching as far as the eye can see, quiet mountain roads, and untroubled nature.

Here’s a snapshot of some quiet moments spent in Kadugannawa, before it opens up to travellers once more.
