Sports Bangladesh Grandmaster Chess Tournament: Two Sri Lankans to participate

The National Chess Champions, Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage and FIDE Master, Sasith Nipun Piyumantha left Sri Lanka on Saturday (18) to participate in the Joytu Sheikh Hasina International Grandmasters Chess Tournament in Dhaka Bangladesh. The Event is held to celebrate the birthday of Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The organisers have offered an attractive cash award of USD 15,000 for the event. 

They are expecting around 20 grandmasters and 20 International Masters to play in the event where the Grandmasters norms are possible. Ranindu who is the first player to play in the FIDE Chess World Cup 2021, held in July this year, won the Bronze Medal at the Asian Zonal Hybrid Chess Championship 2021. He also came to the quarter finals of the World Youth Online Chess Championship 2021 in the under 18 years event. 

FIDE Master Sasith Nipun Piyumantha was one of the strongest players we had by 2018, winning the Gold Medal at the Asian Under 16 Chess Title in 2018 at Chianmai, Thailand competing with all the strongest countries in Asia. He had strong performance in the National Chess Championship 2018 and played for the Sri Lanka National Chess team which participated in the FIDE World Chess Olympiad 2018 in Batumi, Georgia. This is the first time in 2 years, that the Sri Lanka Chess players are participating in the over the board Chess except the FIDE Chess World Cup 2021. No other over the board Chess event was held within the years of 2020 and 2021.
