Sri Lanka’s first Test cricket captain Bandula Warnapura passed away at a private hospital yesterday after a brief illness. He was an old boy of Nalanda College Colombo and was 68 at the time of his demise. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, issuing a condolence message, said he was deeply moved by the news yesterday. 

He said the late sports star had served Sri Lanka Cricket in several capacities, such as a coach, administrator and a commentator, and noted his demise has left a void in the cricketing world. The Premier recalled that the former skipper had contributed untiringly towards Sri Lanka gaining ICC Test status in the early 1980s, and observed that the late cricketer also had the distinction of leading the first Test XI. The Prime Minister also conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved members of the Warnapura family, and said May he attain the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana!
