A written request was submitted to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena by 35 MPs, both Government and the Opposition, yesterday (7), requesting to grant time for them to speak during the Committee Stage Debate on Appropriation Bill 2022.

The letter signed by MPs of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Illangai Tamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK), was handed over to Speaker Abeywardena by SLPP MP Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon, SJB MP Diana Gamage and ITAK MP Charles Nirmalanathan.

The letter said:

“According to the traditions in Parliament, the opening speech of each day of Committee Stage Debate should be delivered by an Opposition MP. However, the SJB is continuing to boycott the sittings and as a result the Opposition MPs have lost the opportunity to speak in the House.”

Apart from that, the MPs noted that the backbenchers rarely receive the opportunity to participate in the Budget Debate. Therefore, they request the Speaker to intervene in the matter and allocate time for them to speak during the Committee Stage Debate”.
