Assemble team of experts immediately – GMOA
By JT de Silva
The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) proposed to the Ministry of Health that a team of specialists versed in the control of pandemics should be formed without delay if the Government is intent on effectively curbing the spread of the third wave of COVID-19. The Secretary of GMOA, Dr. Senal Fernando stated that even past pandemics which had ravaged the country such as dengue, polio etc. had been effectively contained by committees comprising of specialists and technicians versed in the subject.
He stressed that the conduct of the Epidemiology Unit during the pandemic had left much to be desired. Dr. Fernando charged that the Epidemiology Unit is guilty of failing to provide the latest data concerning the infections and deaths from COVID-19 in the country. He alleged that some of its doctors also tend to take arbitrary decisions as well which had dealt a hammer blow to the efforts of the health sector to control the spread of the fatal illness.
GMOA’s Secretary warned that if the proposed committee is not formed immediately it will not take long for the entire health sector to crumble considering the manner in which the pandemic has begun to ravage in this country since last month. He added that the proposals mooted by the GMOA had already been submitted to the subject Minister and the Director General of Health Services.
