Assaulting Domestic Helpers Serious – Amaraweera

SJB MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s family should be referred to a psychiatrist for further investigations, if the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against them are true, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.
According to investigations carried out by Police, members of the MP’s family have allegedly ruined not just one girl’s life, but those of several others. Sexually abusing and physically assaulting domestic helpers is a serious crime that should not be overlooked, Amaraweera said.
The Minister also criticised the mother of 16-year-old girl who died from burn injuries while working at Bathiudeen’s house recently.
“The post-mortem revealed she had been sexually abused from a long time. Her mother now claims that the daughter was ‘sold’ as a domestic worker to pay up her debt. This is also a huge crime,” he said and added, “However, such brutal things are not tolerated in a civilised society and punitive action should be taken against those who are responsible for these women’s deaths.
No one can send their children to work as domestic helpers if they are of age which should receive compulsory education. Whether a family is poor or not, people have no right to send even their own children to houses as domestic workers in this manner,” he said.
