All Island Canteen Owners’ Association (AICOA) Chairman Asela Sampath, on 14 April, blamed Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardena for his arrest and warned that if something critical happened to his children while he was in remand, Gunewardena’s children would suffer the same fate.
He was speaking on his way out of the Fort Magistrate’s Court after being ordered to be remanded until 19 April.
“The Government tries to take down the ones who speak for the rights of the public. Gunewardena is the one who is responsible for arresting me. I’m confused about who the minister in charge of the Police is now. Is it Gunewardana or Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara? I also request the Opposition Leader to intervene to ensure the safety of my family and my children,” he said.
Sampath was arrested on 13 April and produced before the Fort Magistrate. He was remanded until 19 April, for disrupting the duties of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) officials in Colombo in 2019.
