Arrested in possession of foreign made gun

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has arrested a person possessing a foreign made firearm, two magazines and an illegally imported motorcycle.

The Police stated that the suspect was arrested on the morning of 20 January on a tip off given by the Military Intelligence to the Gonahena STF camp. 

At the time of the arrest, the suspect was in possession of a foreign made firearm, two magazines, an illegally imported motorcycle and Rs 26.5 million of which the source could not be disclosed.

The suspect, a 35- year- old resident of Wanawasala, Kelaniya is to be further questioned by the CCD on a 72-hour detention order.

Also, three suspects were arrested in the Vadukkotte area in Jaffna on 20 January while transporting about 45 kilogram of turmeric which was smuggled into the country from India. The suspects were produced in the Jaffna Magistrate's Court and remanded till 3 February, Police said.

Meanwhile, on 20 January, the Mullaitivu STF had arrested three suspects who were preparing to sell a gold Buddha statue of historic value. 

The suspects, aged 21, 41 and 54, are residents of Hatton, Dehiwala and Kotagala. Police stated that they were due to be produced in the Mullaitivu Magistrate's Court yesterday (21).
