We may all be living on the same planet, and all be human beings but we are all very different. Of course geography, ethnicity, as well as cultures have a huge role to play in how and why we are different. Which is why it’s time we take a trip around the world to visit some of the interesting places and people that live on our planet.

Our journey begins in the country of Japan, which lies in the far East of the map. Japan is what you would call an archipelago (Ar-ki-pel-a-go), meaning the country is made up of a bunch of islands. In fact, Japan is made of more than 6,800 islands, but the biggest of them all are the five main islands; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa.

Geography

If you took all the countries in the world with the most people living in it, Japan would be the eleventh on that list. It also is a country that has some of the biggest cities in the world. But moving away from the densely packed cities, you’ll find plenty of gorgeous mountains, rivers, hot springs and even volcanoes. Yes, Japan has a lot of volcanoes, especially because it is located in what many people call the ‘ring of fire’ where some of the most active volcanoes in the world are.

Sadly, because of that Japan has a lot of volcanic natural disasters as well as earthquakes. But those aren’t the only natural disasters that the people of Japan have had to face. Tsunamis and typhoons are also faced by Japan each year and sometimes, if these disasters get really bad, a lot of people do lose their homes, and sometimes their lives.

Economy

But this hasn’t stopped Japan from becoming one of the biggest economies around the world. Japan is one of the biggest manufacturers around the world, producing some of the best electronics and consumer items around the world. Japan is one of the biggest economies but that wasn’t the case a few decades ago. After the Second World War, Japan was a struggling nation. But with hard work and innovation, the country soon changed the tides and became an economic superpower in the East.

People and culture

All this is because of the culture and people of Japan. The country has a rich history going back many thousands of years, which is unique to many parts of the world. Shinto and Buddhist beliefs are observed by most people, and these reflect on their culture as well, which has a deeply ingrained respect for nature. The people of Japan are also known to be hardworking, polite and courteous.

Being on time is considered to be very important for anything but Japan might be working too hard, which has started to become a problem. There’s a lot more that you can learn about Japan. There is so much to talk about a country that has so many interesting things to talk about. So after reading this, take some time to read more about Japan online with a parent or older sibling.

Happy reading!
