Apples produced in Western countries and imported to Sri Lanka can be grown in places like Ampara District too. A retired Cooperative Development Officer named A.L.A. Gaffoor in Addalaichenai is involved in this venture and proved that apples can be grown here successfully using organic fertiliser. Gaffoor says he planted a few apple saplings known as ‘Masan’ in his residential compound at Addalaichenai Beach Road nearly two years ago and treated them with utmost care.

He used organic fertiliser on the concept of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ‘Let’s use organic fertiliser and prosper a chemical-free country.’ They bore fruit. He harvested 75 fruits. There are small fruits and flowers on other branches. The harvested fruits were sampled by friends and relatives. They expressed interest in this venture. He told them that anyone who is determined can succeed in this venture using the President’s concept. So, let’s try and succeed in this venture, he said.
