Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera appointed an Expert Committee to conduct a comprehensive and scientific study into the Seruwawila gold, copper and iron deposits.
Addressing the Media yesterday (21), he said, the committee will be chaired by an Additional Secretary at the Ministry; Prof. Athula Senaratne of the University of Peradeniya. Several other experts in the field have been nominated to the committee.
Amaraweera speaking at the Media briefing yesterday (21) said, all possible steps will be taken to utilise the country’s natural mineral resources, so that raw materials can be turned into value-added products locally and sold at higher prices.
However, as the current excavation technology is very advanced, it is possible to mine the deposit to depths of about 250-300 metres. “More information could be revealed about the mineral resources once the report is submitted by the committee,” he stated.
