The Government has taken all the necessary measures to prevent the newly discovered ‘Omicron’ coronavirus variant from entering the country, Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa said in Parliament yesterday (29). The Government took action in this regard three days ago and the Ministry of Health has also paid special attention to this matter, the Minister said.

 In response to concerns raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Rajapaksa said the health sector was mobilised and necessary decisions were taken three days ago and firm decisions has been taken regarding six countries. “We decided to provide booster shots for all the eligible Sri Lankans even before the Omicron variant was discovered.

 The President, the Prime Minister and the whole Government is focusing on this matter and we all are taking a special interest in it,” Rajapaksa said. Speaking further, he said that special safety measures have been implemented at airports. “Also, the medical history of all the passengers who are arriving in Sri Lanka is being monitored on daily basis,” he added.
