Agri Ministry to decide on rice price
The Cabinet of Ministers, which met last night, had granted approval to the Ministry of Agriculture to opt for competitive prices rather than sticking to the fertiliser subsidy, if the private rice mafia is continuing to purchase paddy at higher prices.
Accordingly, Cabinet has decided to allow the Agriculture Ministry to decide on the price range for rice. Sources said as a result of this decision, paddy would be purchased at Rs 52, with wet paddy to be bought at Rs 44.
Cabinet had taken this decision due to the continued obstacles placed on this process by the private rice mafia controlled by the rice mill owners when the Government had decided to buy a kilogramme of paddy at Rs 50 through the PMB.
It had also been decided that the guaranteed price for rice would be maintained at Rs 97 in the local market.
