News Act Together or Face Consequences

Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera warned that if the President and the Government do not get their act together, he will personally take the lead in toppling it, before the end of the term of this regime. He said, currently, there was not a single responsible official within the Government to highlight the burning issues of the masses other than the President.

But, he noted the President alone cannot be forced to resolve all problems through his own initiative. The Thera said though the present Government including the President had been voted into office with the fervent hope of ushering in a country that protects its national resources and resolving thorny issues of public, such aspirations had been dashed after a lapse of 24 months.

“If the President and the Government do not take steps to redeem themselves in the eyes of the people sooner than later, then I will personally take the lead in toppling it, for the sake of the innocent people here and the future generations of this land,” the outspoken monk told a political talk show aired on State-run ITN on 19 October.

“Obviously, we will give this President sufficient time to reevaluate their commitments and promises to this Nation. If not, they should be prepared to face consequences of their actions. If the country is convinced that this President and this Government also traverses on the same worn out political path trodden by previous Governments, then I will personally intervene and take to the streets with patriotic forces to bring about a genuine system change in this country.”

The Thera recently petitioned the Supreme Court, praying to nullify a decision taken by the present Government to hand over 40 per cent of shares of the LNG Yugadanavi Power Plant in Kerawalapitiya to a US firm via the signing of it in secret at midnight and sans adopting the accepted tender procedure.

The monk was supported in his FR petition by Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith. Ven. Gunawansa Thera, a monk known for his forthright views on national issues said the country was presently paying a huge price for the lack of a national master plan to develop it, despite successive regimes having been voted into office since the Administration of ex-PM Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

He also blamed the ‘incompetent and lame duck’ team chosen by the President to implement policies contained in his election manifesto for most of the present ills plaguing the society, such as the fertiliser issue affecting farmers, the failure to resolve the principalteacher salary anomalies effectively, the rising cost of living etc.

The Thera observed that the Government, which had claimed it does not have sufficient funds towards the resolution of the principal-teacher salary anomalies, has millions in its coffers to allocate for the staging of the delayed PC Poll and asked what national purpose had been served via the PCs. He said when the time comes for the conduct of the PC Poll he will let the country know of his strong opposition to Provincial Councils, which he described as ‘nothing but a white elephant that serves to provide employment to kith and kin of ruling party politicians.’

He also alleged that the fertiliser issue had been manufactured, thanks to a plot hatched by forces both within and outside these shores which are determined to destabilise the country for their gains.
