The Government will take the first step towards releasing agricultural lands acquired as part of the Siyambalanduwa Solar Power Project by holding discussing with stakeholders. The State Ministry of Solar Power, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development, and Forest Conservation will meet to discuss this topic. Concerns were expressed at a progress review meeting held under State Minister of Solar Power, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development Duminda Dissanayake to assess the current status of the project which aims to increase renewable energy to 70 per cent by 2030, as stated in the President’s manifesto.
The essential preliminary measures were performed to establish the Siyambalanduwa solar power plant, including evaluating feasibility, obtaining lands, and conducting environmental assessments. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) also assisted in researching procedures to be followed for the plant’s development. The Cabinet approved a proposal by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), the transmission licensee, to begin procurement and implement the solar power project through private sector investments, as well as for the construction of a power line from Medagama to Ampara under the aforementioned project.
