The All Ceylon Peasants Federation (ACPF) said, 180 women had taken their lives due to their inability to repay their debts or micro finance loans which they had obtained from banks.
This was disclosed to the Media by the ACPF Secretary T.B. Sarath at a Media briefing on 22 November in Dambulla. He charged, the Government had also not looked into the plight of scores of innocent women who had obtained loans from banks for their livelihoods and are now struggling to repay it due to the impact of the pandemic. Sarath claimed, 2.5 million women had faced this predicament.
