Man arrested for promoting Zahran's extremist ideologies
A 38-year-old individual was arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) in Muttur, Trincomalee yesterday (13), on charges of promoting extremist ideologies.
The arrestee had reportedly conducted classes promoting such ideologies in 2018, on the instructions of Zahran Hashim, perpetrator of the Easter Sunday Attacks of 2019.
Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana further stated that the classes were held for students facing both G.C.E Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examination that year (2018)
The suspect is currently being detained by the TID for further interrogation under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), whilst two more suspects from the Gampola and Kattankudy areas have also been taken into TID custody over their involvement with extremist activities.
The DIG noted that the latter two suspects were being incarcerated at the Kegalle and Polonnaruwa prisons, prior to being handed over to the TID.
