A guide to men's footwear
By Navin Gunasekara
Footwear is an essential part of every outfit. It not only completes the outfit, but can make or break it. I have to admit I like my shoes and had quite a large collection. With moving from Sydney to Colombo, my shoe collection has reduced somewhat but any time I travel overseas I can't resist buying a pair or two, especially sneakers.
However, buying shoes is not easy. From sneakers, to slip-ons to dress shoes and boots, there are so many different types of shoes in all styles and colours and material, brands and varying prices. Shopping for shoes can be overwhelming. So, here is my guide to what shoes every man should have.
Seems kind of obvious, but this is a necessity. Whether it's working out in the gym or going for a run, you're going to need a pair of sneakers. Buy a pair based on what you need it for. For example if you are a runner, buy a pair that is designed for running. Also, whether it's Nike, Adidas or New Balance, buy the best that you can afford. I recommend doing a bit of research online before.
A pair of black leather oxfords is another must. The name Oxford refers to a closed-lace shoe and is an essential piece of footwear whether it's with pants and a shirt to work or a suit to a special occasion. Go for a classic leather material with an almond shaped top. Brown leather is also a nice look, especially with blue pants. However, if you can only have one, then stick with black.
Also referred to as slip-ons, these low cut laceless shoes are an essential item of footwear. They are versatile and can be worn with pants, shorts or even a suit. Go for something suede in a neutral colour. This way you can pair it with any colour.
White low tops
Despite being a little bit high maintenance, a pair of white low tops should definitely be a part of your footwear repertoire. There are literally hundreds of different types of white shoes out there.
I chose to go with a pair of white chucks. They're an old school classic that is comfortable and looks good with any outfit. However, you could go for leather Adidas Stan Smith or a pair or retro Nike Cortez or Adidas Gazelle. It all depends on your taste and preference. These shoes will never go out of fashion.
When it comes to building your footwear collection, there is no golden rule. It all depends on your taste, preferences and the size of your wallet. As long as you have the above shoes in your collection, you will be ready for every occasion. As always remember your attitude is as important as your look.
I wanted to take a minute to talk about what's going on right now. I'm not going to address the actual virus. There is a lot of information going around about it and I don't know enough to comment. I will however say this.
There have been a lot of posts and comments on social media that are not based on fact or truth and only contribute to causing fear and panic which does not help during these scary and crazy times. So, be responsible. Stay positive, take the necessary precautions and be safe.
I pray that we all keep safe and healthy and this all blows over soon.
