The Personal History of David Copperfield, based on the 1850 Victorian era novel, David Copperfield by renowned English writer Charles Dickens, features a freshpoint of view, of the popular novel. The comedy-drama movie, delivers character, dimension, and performance by its lead cast, which highlights Dev Patel, as the title character.

Like the title suggests, the film walks its audience through the personal life history of David Copperfield, beginning with his birth, it focuses on the insights into the confronting challenges and adventures he faces, right up to his maturity, with new and old friends and enemies who walk in and out of his life. 

Charles Dickens’ classic novel, focuses on a tale that has been told in many forms, each showing the orphaned boy’s fight for survival and happiness above all, while also focusing on the characters in his life, which dates back as far as 1911, when the oldest known silent black-and-white film adaptation of the famous novel released. 

What makes this new adaptation different, from the countless film and tv adaptations through the years is the cinematography, plot depth that is highlighted by theconnection between the cast, and the artistry of showcasing a classic by combining modern day film making technology, keeping in mind that this fresh new adaptation portrays the story in a fresh new light.The film delivers calm pacing, that is supported by a rich layout and is content driven, with its dialogue, which makes sure that it easily holds the attention of its viewers. 

Armando Iannucci’s bold multicultural casting choice, with everyone bringing in their own charm, skill, and character strengths to deliver a strong performance, proved to work once again. The cast with Dev Patel as the title character, shows Jairaj Varsani as young David Copperfield, Peter Capaldi as Mr Micawber, Hugh Laurie as Mr. Dick, Aneurin Barnard as James Steerforth, Morfydd Clark as Dora Spenlow and Clara Copperfield, Daisy May Cooper as Peggotty, Tilda Swinton as Betsey Trotwood, Nikki Amuka-Bird as Mrs Steerforth and Benedict Wong as Mr.Wickfield, alongside several other equally strong stars. 

The 119-minute film by director Armando Iannucci, who produced the film together with Kevin Loader, was made in collaboration with Wish more Entertainment, Film4 Productions and Film Nation Entertainment. Made with a budget of 15.6 million dollars, the film managed to rake in 8.4 million at the worldwide box office. Though the film initially released in March 2020, it is now making its way to cinemas in selected countries. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, taking its toll on the international film industry, with closures in place in countless countries due to the spread, the United States release on 8 May has been rescheduled to14 August 2020. Meanwhile, the new adaptation has received positive reviews and ratings, with an impressive 93 per cent featured on Rotten Tomatoes, 75 per cent on Metacritic and an almost moderate 6.3/10 on IMDb.

This refreshing retelling is one that many who enjoyed the classic will find to be both enjoyable and entertaining, while others who do not generally enjoy the novels by Charles Dickens, might find to be long drawn, rather than enjoyable.
