76th UNGA session: President meets Latvian counterpart
A meeting between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and President of the Republic of Latvia, Egils Levits, took place on Tuesday (21) afternoon They met on the sidelines of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
The two Leaders were in agreement that strong steps should be taken to further the 25-year long diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Latvia.
The two Leaders discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on economy and society and exchanged views on measures to be taken to boost the tourism industry in the two countries as the pandemic subsides.
The two Heads of State also focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the fields of education and digital technology and discussed the topic of a change in the composition of the UN Security Council (UNSC) and the need for greater representation in UNSC for the Asian, Southern African, the Middle East and South American regions.
Foreign Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris, Principal Advisor to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Foreign Secretary Admiral Jayanath Colombage and Mohan Peiris, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, were also present during this meeting.
