38 Lankans evacuated from warzones in Ethiopia

Thirty eight Sri Lankans have been successfully evacuated from the war zone in the Tigre region of Northern Ethiopia recently, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Sri Lankan Embassy in Ethiopia has released the Sri Lankans from the war zone as a result of discussions held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the United Nations in Ethiopia.
Sri Lankans and foreigners from a number of other countries have been transported by a UN security convoy from Tigre to Afar in Ethiopia and then to the capital, Addis Ababa.
All these Sri Lankans, who are garment factory workers, will be repatriated to the island soon.
The Ethiopian Government launched a military operation in the Tigre region on 4 November, 2020, following an attack on a federal military base belonging to the Tigre People's Liberation Front.
